Deze korte film (Teacher Seduces Student) is gemaakt tijdens de filmtraining aan een groep Ghanese jongeren die voorlichting wilden geven op middelbare scholen en op sociale media.
In verschillende landen heb ik met jongeren gewerkt om hen korte films te leren maken over een thema dat hun hart raakt. In de binnenlanden van Suriname leerden jongeren filmen over maatschappelijke noden in hun dorpen. Op Bonaire wilden jongeren in korte films laten zien met welke problemen ze kampten. In Ghana leerde ik een groep jongeren korte voorlichtingsfilms te maken over seks gerelateerde issues. Deze filmpjes werden verwerkt in de game “My Jorley” over de bewustwording van males negative attitudes towards sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
Over de jongeren
Het gaat altijd over jongeren die hard moeten vechten voor hun bestaan, een laag zelfbeeld hebben en weinig vertrouwen in een comfortabele toekomst voor zichzelf. Wat mij telkens opvalt is dat ze zo ontzettend gemotiveerd zijn om uitdrukking te geven aan hun zorgen, en om deze te delen met anderen. Film blijkt daar een heel adequaat middel voor te zijn.

In Suriname, het binnenland
Jongeren in het binnenland filmden hoe jonge kinderen in hun dorp al vroeg onderwijs kregen doordat hun dorp het voorschoolse educatieproject Leri for Life uitvoert. Andere dorpen raken gestimuleerd om dit ook te gaan opzetten.
In Ghana, Accra
Adolescent sexual and reproductive health, teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, unsafe abortion are topics that have not been thoroughly addressed by Ghana’s homes and schools in the past. Due to a lack of education, especially in rural communities, teenage pregnancy is a common occurrence in Ghana, and often results in unsafe abortions or dropping out of school.

A group of nine (future) young filmers were trained to inform and empower young people with the knowledge, skills and support they need to make smart choices about their sexual and reproductive health, in order that they can lead productive and healthy lives. The result was a set of short films on the above mentioned topics. The films were distributed on social media, YouTube and television in order to reach as much youngsters as possible. The films stimulate to think and to talk about the topics and create awareness. It will engage young people in conversations about sex and HIV/AIDS prevention.

During the first training the team acquired basic knowledge whithin the main disciplines of filming (what is a script, how to build a story, analysing visual language, how to handle camera and sound equipment, how to deal with light). During this second training we worked on writing short scripts (What is the story about? What is the main subject? How to formulate the logline?), building characters (what’s their problem, how do they want to solve these?) writing their histories. They learned how to draw a storyboard, how to position the camera in a particular scene (camera mapping), they learned the value of choosing the right location, they learned more about editing.
Both teachers, Afra and Richard, were present every day, being responsible for their own specific contribution.
